The R&D engineer is expected to develop early prototypes of new bioinformatic data analysis tools. Relative to other positions on the R&D team, there is a greater emphasis on developing novel algorithmic techniques to abstract meaning from biological data sets. R&D engineers are expected to draw upon a range of computational techniques in order to extract accurate and meaningful “signal” from noisy biological data, and then implement those techniques in prototype or demonstration software products.
Duties and responsibilities
Develop new techniques for bioinformatic data analysis, with an emphasis on improved accuracy relative to existing methods
Implement novel bioinformatic analysis algorithms as software tools (e.g., with run-time parameters and/or other configurable options) that could be uploaded to the Seven Bridges Platform and run by another user
Test newly developed bioinformatics algorithms against existing techniques and methods, using a combination of real and simulated data, and refine the algorithms iteratively based upon test feedback
Participate in weekly team meetings and report progress on a regular basis
Disclose novel aspects of work to patent committee and assist in drafting patent documents when necessary
Qualifications and competencies
A degree in either an engineering field, mathematics, or the physical sciences. Advanced PhD or Master's degree is preferred.
Experience with various advanced concepts in data analysis, such as: statistical inference, machine learning, data visualization, numerical simulation, signal and image processing, Monte Carlo methods, etc.
Experience with software development and working with a programming language, (ideally python, java, matlab, R or C++), although not necessarily in a commercial setting, and it needn’t be the main focus of prior work
Be able to learn new subjects quickly and thoroughly
Have the ability to work as a team member and independently
Excellent spoken and written English.
